Obtaining a provisional licence

Before you can start taking driving lessons or book your theory test, you must apply for a provisional licence. You can either apply online or by completing a D1 application form, which is available at most post offices.

Theory Test

You can book your Theory Test online or call the DVSA on 0300 200 1122

Part 1 Multiple-Choice question

The multiple-choice part of the test consists of 50 questions covering various topics. You need to answer correctly a minimum of 43 questions. You are given 57 minutes to complete this part of the test.

Part 2 Hazard Perception

You will have a 3 minute break before this part of the test commences. Hazard Perception consists of 14 one-minute video clips. In each clip, you are asked to identify potential hazards as a driver in real time. Each clip contains at least one hazard. There will be a total of 15 hazards in the 14 clips and, depending on how quickly you identify each, you will be given a score of between 0 and 5. You need to score at least 44 points out of 75 to pass this part of the test.

You must pass both parts of the test to pass the theory test. I recommend you use ''The Official DVSA Theory Test'' which is the only book that includes the entire bank of questions and also gives an explanation of the answers. It is written by the DVSA, who are the people who set test. You can buy it at most High Street bookshops, or on Amazon.co.uk. You have 2 years to take your practical test from the date you pass your theory test.

Practical Test

You can book your Practical Test online or call the DVSA on 0300 200 1122

When you have passed your theory test you can now prepare for your practical test. As the waiting lists can be quite long sometimes, you can have a chat with me about booking your driving test. One of the common reasons for failing the practical test is being inadequately prepared for it, so it makes sense to make sure you’re well prepared to take your test.

The Practical test lasts approx 40 minutes. You must get no more than 15 minor faults and no serious faults. The practical test will still include an emergency controlled stop, which will be conducted in 1 every 3 tests

From 4th October 2010, Independent Driving became part of the practical driving test in the UK, and also the manoeuvres were reduced from 2 to 1, in each test. On 4th December 2017, the practical driving test was changed again including the Independent Driving section, to task the candidate to drive for 20 minutes being either to follow the sat nav or road signs. It doesn’t matter if candidates go the wrong way - that can happen to the most experienced drivers, as long as they do it safely.

Also, the reversing manoeuvres were changed too. For more information and why the driving test was changed, please Click here

Change Your Test Date

You can change your test date by clicking here or call DVSA on 0300 200 1122

This could be to give yourself more time or because you’re ready sooner than the date you have.

Pass Plus

Pass Plus consists of 6 practical modules which cover driving in town, in all weathers, rural roads, dual carriage ways, night driving and motorways. You can take Pass Plus any time within 12 months of passing your driving test to qualify for discount from selected insurance companies.

Pass Plus will give you confidence as you 'learn to drive' as a real driver, not with 'L' plates displayed, but with support. For more information please call me.

Assessment Lesson

If you have had a break from lessons or want to move from another Instructor for one reason or another, you will find it useful to have an assessment lesson. During the course of the lesson I will carefully evaluate your skills, identifying those areas where you need more training. At the end of the lesson you will get a clear and professional assessment of how your training should progress.

Motorway Lesson

As of 4th June 2018, learners are allowed to go on the motorway with a fully qualified driving instructor, and only then in a dual control car.

You may want to book a motorway lesson if you’ve passed your test and you still feel nervous, worried or would like more practice or to increase your knowledge of motorways.

The ways, skills, customs, myths, do's and don'ts of motorway driving can usually be covered in a two hour session with plenty of time for practice. My aim will be to make sure you feel confident beginning your motorway- driving skill for life.

Refresher Lesson

Refresher lessons are suitable for many people and can be tailor made to suit your individual needs. The reasons could include, Experienced drivers who need to retake a driving test after a period of disqualification . Drivers who have fallen foul of the New Drivers Act. Drivers returning to driving after a break. Holders of non-UK driving licences who are not required to take a UK driving test. Drivers who are nervous about any aspect of driving.

Please email or call to talk about how I can help you.
